Top 5 local restaurants to try near Benalmádena and Fuengirola
After more than 12 years living in Spain, I’ve come to appreciate the rhythms of Spanish life — friendly people, quality ingredients, and weekends centered around good food and conversation. I’m often asked by clients for local recommendations, so I’ve decided to start sharing my favorites through a weekly blog.
This week’s “High Five” highlights five of my go-to general restaurants — places that serve a variety of dishes, not just seafood or steak. These are personal favorites, not based on trends or reviews, but on real quality and consistent experiences. The area I focus on stretches from Malaga to Fuengirola, centered around Benalmádena.
1. La Abacería de David – Fuengirola
This hidden gem is tucked away in the backstreets of Fuengirola. David, the owner, is welcoming and speaks Spanish, English, and German. The food is lovingly prepared in a small kitchen and includes high-quality jamón, cheeses, and excellent specials.
Don’t be afraid to try something new — if it’s on the menu, it’s worth trying. David also offers great wines between €15 and €25. Trust his recommendations.

2. Higuerón Restaurant – Benalmádena
Located just above the A-7 highway near the Higuerón West urbanisation, this modern restaurant offers excellent views and a stylish interior (renovated in 2021). The cuisine is inspired by northern Spain — the fabada (bean stew) is a must.
I recommend the bar area for a livelier experience, or the main dining area if you prefer a quiet lunch. Reservations are highly recommended, especially at lunchtime.

3. Mesón El Pollo del Tío Paco – Málaga outskirts
This local favorite is perfect for long Saturday or Sunday lunches. Located near Malaga Airport, it may seem unassuming, but don’t be fooled — the place is always packed by 13:30, so booking is essential.
Go for the morcilla and chorizo starters. The chicken, roasted over an open flame, is outstanding — half a chicken is more than enough. It’s not fancy, but it’s authentic and delicious.

4. Restaurante Tánicos – Benalmádena
A true classic. This long-standing restaurant delivers traditional Spanish cuisine at a high level. The staff is polished and professional, and the menu features both tapas and main dishes such as gorgonzola veal cutlet and spicy pork medallions.
The wine list is exceptional — it’s clear the team knows and loves good wine. This is a great spot for a special evening out. Book in advance.

5. La Taberna de Mike Palmer – Alhaurín de la Torre
This one’s a bit off the beaten path — near horse stables in Alhaurín de la Torre — but it’s worth the detour. The food is refined and creative, with standout dishes like the tortilla de patatas al whisky. Even the bread is exceptional.
Prices are slightly higher than average, but the quality justifies it. Booking ahead is essential for weekend lunches.

Final thoughts
These five restaurants represent a range of styles and prices, but they all have one thing in common: consistently great food. I’ll continue sharing more favorites in future posts, and I’d love to hear your recommendations too. Enjoy discovering the local food scene — it’s one of the best parts of living on the Costa del Sol.
